KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Wyandotte County jury deadlocked in a case involving a Kansas City, Kansas, priest charged with inappropriately touching an 11-year-old girl, resulting in a mistrial.

Accusations against Father Scott Kallal first surfaced in July 2017 when the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas announced it had suspended Kallal from his position at Holy Spirit Catholic Church after a father brought forth claims Kallal sexually assaulted his daughter while at St. Patrick Catholic School in Kansas City, Kansas.

The church suspended Kallal following the accusations.

Later that year, a judge in Wyandotte County ruled for Kallal to stand trial in the case.

Following Monday’s mistrial, the archdiocese released a statement, saying Kallal remained on a “leave of absence” that prevents him from “publicly exercising priestly ministry.”

“I continue to pray that truth is served and all those affected by this ordeal may find healing and peace,” Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann said in the release.

The archdiocese said that once legal proceedings were complete, it would finish its own evaluation of Kallal.
