KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A motorcyclist was killed when the vehicle crashed in the 5700 block of Bob Billings Parkway in Lawrence, Kansas, Sunday morning.

According to police, the driver was a 25-year-old Lawrence resident.

Information released by the Lawrence Police Department said that one of the department's officers attempted to make a traffic stop for a motorcycle around 1:08 a.m. Sunday near Monterey Way and Bob Billings Parkway. The driver did not stop and fled at high speed.

The officer initiated a brief pursuit, but lost sight of the motorcycle and terminated the pursuit.

At 5:33 a.m. a driver called police to check on what they thought was a jogger in distress. Officers arrived to find a motorcycle crashed and the driver deceased.

Information released by police did not specify if it was the same motorcycle involved in the pursuit, but the officer involved in the pursuit was placed on administrative leave while an investigation takes place.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office will conduct the investigation. An internal review will also be conducted within the department to make sure policies were followed.
