MSHP: Pursuit in northwest Missouri leads to gunfire, deadly crash

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A suspect was killed in a pursuit involving Gentry County, Missouri, deputies on Thursday evening, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol,.

The incident happened around 10:45 p.m., when a Gentry County Sheriff's Office deputy began pursuing a pickup truck for traffic violations.

MSHP said Gentry County advised gunshots came from the pickup around 11 p.m.

The pursuit continued, and the deputy and suspect exchanged fire.

The pursuit entered Dekalb County, and the suspect in the pickup crashed on Missouri 31 at Fairmount Road, according to MSHP.

The suspect was killed in the crash. He was identified as Shiloh D. Smith, 35, of St. Joseph.

On Monday, MSHP said preliminary autopsy results showed Smith died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol Division of Drug and Crime Control is assisting with the investigation.
