18th and Vine is the neighborhood of artists…musical and otherwise.
Now, you can add your brushstrokes of greatness, even if you’re not too comfortable with a paintbrush in your hand.
It’s called Harmony on the Vine and it will only be complete with your help. The Executive Director of the American Jazz Museum, Cheptoo Kositany-Buckner, says they hope this cooperative project will be a point of unity “in the neighborhood where people of all races have always come together.”
Noted teacher, artist and muralist, Michael Toombs designed and sketched the nine-panel canvas, coming in at 36 feet wide and eight feet tall.
Today, from just about 3:30 p.m. until dark, as part of First Fridays, the community is invited to come down to 18th and Vine, take brush in hand and start to fill in the story of the Kansas City Jazz. Under the watchful eye of professionals, people of every age and artistic level can bring life to the canvas.
After today, there will be regularly scheduled painting periods at the museum into mid-September. Tap into your inner Dali, Van Gogh, Rockwell or Picasso and be a part of 18th and Vine, forever.
