He’s been giving college quarterbacks nightmares and now he’s hours away from a dream come true.  For Charles Harris, it started at Lincoln Prep, where the football phenomenon also excelled on the hardwood.

Steve Evans, the current principal was also his basketball coach.

“He was gifted athletically.  He was physically and mentally a level or two above most athletes.”

Evans says Harris was a fierce competitor on the field and court, but a gentle giant when he roamed the halls of the high school. He says his story resonates with all the students at Lincoln.

“Charles is an example that we can use to say there is light at the end of the tunnel.  Whether it be sports, robotics, debate, our students need to know that Charles didn’t have a lot of opportunities when he graduated from high school.  And Missouri came along and gave him an opportunity, and he made the most of that opportunity.”

Lincoln Prep is hosting a watch party on draft night for Harris.  And no matter where the projected first rounder lands, Evans says he’ll make that city and team proud.

“He’s going to be a great NFL player and I think whatever team ends up getting him is going to be very, very happy with what he does for the community he lands in.  He’s just a great product of Lincoln.”

The watch party starts at 6 p.m. at Lincoln Prep (2111 Woodland Ave. in Kansas City, Missouri).
