KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A custodian at Gracemor Elementary School in the North Kansas City School District was fired after he was charged with four counts of child porn-related offenses.

Jackson County prosecutors Monday charged Perry Smith, 53, with the crimes. Smith had been at the school for nearly 17 years.

Court documents said detectives visited Smith at the school and asked to interview him off school grounds. It was during that interview where Smith consented to a search of his cellphone, which allegedly contained images of child pornography.

A subsequent search of Smith’s residence revealed additional child pornography, documents said.

In a statement, the district said none of the crimes happened on district property or involved students.

“Safety and security is a top priority for North Kansas City Schools,” the statement read. “We work diligently to ensure all sites are safe places for all.”

A warrant for Smith’s arrest has been issued. Once in custody, prosecutors have requested a $50,000 bond and are asking for a condition that he not be within 1,000 feet of any school.
