CENTERVIEW, Mo. – An Odessa man faces a year in jail after reportedly stabbing a dog to death.

Mark J. Thompson, 57, of Odessa is charged with one count of animal abuse.

Court documents say a man was looking for his Bullmastiff dog near his home in the 100 block of NW 601st Rd. when he came upon Thompson straddling the dog. The man told police he saw Thompson stabbing the dog repeatedly in the chest and neck.

Thompson stopped stabbing the dog when the man got closer. According to court documents, Thompson told the man “looks like I owe you a dog.”

The Bullmastiff died from the injuries.

Court documents say Thompson admitted to killing the dog.

Thompson will make his first court appearance on Oct. 27.
