KANSAS CITY, Mo. — An officer was taken to the hospital after marked police vehicle was struck Saturday morning while on the scene of a crash on Interstate 70 in Wyandotte County.

Officers responded to a one-vehicle crash at 1:05 a.m. Saturday after a vehicle entered westbound Interstate 70 near mile marker 420.5, swerved right and hit a retaining wall. The vehicle, a 2011 Nissan Versa, then turned on its side and slid roughly 500 feet, coming to a stop on its roof.

The three occupants of that vehicle were suspected to have sustained minor injuries, according to a crash report from Kansas Highway Patrol.

At 2:48 a.m., a male driver struck the police vehicle, which had its lights on, in the rear driver’s side. A female officer was taken to an area hospital with suspected minor injuries, according to a KHP crash report. The driver who struck the police unit drove a 2011 Toyota Corolla and also was taken to a hospital with suspected minor injuries.

Officers had dispersed road flares to alert drivers of the initial crash.
