KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A man died Monday night when his car slammed into a bridge at East 23rd Street and Blue Ridge Boulevard in Kansas City, Missouri.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash, which happened about 7 p.m.

Police said the driver, later identified as 25-year-old Johnathon Rains of Independence, was driving his Chrysler Sebring east on East 23rd Street.

He lost control of the car, sheared off a light pole and slammed into a concrete bridge column, police said.

Rains died at the scene.

The crash forced the closure of the east and westbound lanes of East 23rd Street, according to a tweet from the Missouri Department of Transportation.

The bridge did not sustain structural damage in the wreck.

The victim's name has not been released.
