KANSAS CITY, Mo. — One person was killed in a multi-vehicle wreck on Interstate 70 caused by a wrong-way driver.

The crash happened just before 9:30 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of I-70, about a quarter mile west of Adams Dairy Parkway in Blue Springs, Missouri.

Thirty-seven-year-old Desiree Smith was driving west in the eastbound lanes of the interstate, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, and hit an eastbound car head-on.

The driver of the eastbound vehicle, identified as 44-year-old Heather Blackman of Blue Springs, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Smith was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.

A passenger from Blackman's car was taken to the same hospital with moderate injuries, according to the MSHP crash report.

Blackman and her passenger had both been wearing their seatbelts. It's unclear if Smith had hers on, MSHP said.

It is unknown if Smith will face charges.
