KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A pedestrian was critically injured after being hit by two separate vehicles late Thursday near Independence and South Oakley avenues.

According to Kansas City, Missouri, police, a silver Volkswagen Beetle traveling west on Independence Avenue ran over the pedestrian. The vehicle drove into a business lot, and the driver exited to look at the front of the vehicle.

The driver then got back inside the vehicle and drove away, heading northbound on Oakley Avenue, police said.

A short time later, a gold Honda CRV also traveling westbound on Independence Avenue ran over the pedestrian and dragged the person under the vehicle “for a short distance,” police said.

Police responded to the area shortly before 10 p.m. The pedestrian was transported to an area hospital with critical injuries.

The first driver left the scene, police said, and the second driver was not injured.
