KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A 61-year-old woman was struck and killed on Tuesday while walking her dog in Olathe, authorities said.

Capt. Mike Hall, a spokesman for the Olathe Fire Department, said a pedestrian died after being struck near West 138th Street and South Black Bob Road.

Olathe police on Wednesday identified the woman as Jill E. Summers, of Olathe.

The dog was taken to an animal hospital with injuries. Police said the dog was expected to make a full recovery.

Police also said the family has asked that community members who want to donate to the dog's medical expenses direct those donations toward a local German shepherd rescue of their choice.

The driver of the car involved stayed on scene. The driver was not injured.
