KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A pedestrian was struck and killed in Kansas City, Missouri, early Thursday morning.

According to police, the crash happened around 1:45 a.m. on northbound Interstate 35 below Independence Avenue.

Investigators determined the pedestrian was either walking in traffic or attempting to cross the lanes when they were struck by a semi-trailer.

The driver told police they were initially unsure if they hit something and turned around to check the scene and then called officers.

The victim — identified Friday as Ilich C. Gutierrez, 38, of KCMO — died at the scene of the crash.

Gutierrez is the 93rd traffic-related fatality in KCMO during 2020 compared to 62 through the same date in 2019.
