A man in a wheelchair died after he was struck by a dump truck Thursday afternoon.
Police said after 1 p.m., a water department employee driving a city vehicle hit a man in a wheelchair in the intersection of 63rd and Prospect.
The driver told police he didn't know the truck made contact with the wheelchair. Police said the wheelchair was carried a short distance.
The driver turned around and returned to the intersection after he felt something fall off his truck.
The victim was declared dead at the scene, officials said.
KC Water released the following statement:
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the person killed today at 63rd Street and Prospect.
Two KC Water employees were in a dump truck hauling material to a job site when the accident happened.
The crash remains under investigation by the Kansas City Police Department. They have our full cooperation.
