Police say an officer fearing for his safety shot a dog while responding to a call Saturday night in the Northland.

Around 11 p.m. on Saturday, July 30, officers were called out to a reported disturbance at a residence in the 3800 block of N. Cleveland. As officers arrived and knocked on the door, surveillance video obtained by 41 Action News shows that a dog came out of a door and approached officers.

The video shows that an officer opened fire at the dog, striking it at least once.

The homeowner says the dog died from the gunfire.

"Part of me died when she died, and I feel like there's no just reason for her death," Brandee Buschman said.

In a statement by Kansas City Police, officers say they never want to see a family pet injured or killed.

“Most officers are dog owners and it is unfortunate when these incidents occur,” the statement read.
