KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Police said one man died and another is in the hospital after a two-car crash Wednesday morning at 31st Street and Jackson Avenue.

Police Sergeant Bill Mahoney said officers noticed a Dodge Charger speeding southbound on Jackson Avenue near Truman Road. Officers tried to pull the car over, but gave up the pursuit at about 23rd Street.

A few minutes later, police received reports of a crash involving the same Charger at 31st Street and Jackson Avenue. Mahoney said the Charger and a westbound Nissan Xterra SUV collided. It's unclear which vehicle had the green light. The Charger caught fire after the crash.

Mahoney said someone, possibly friends of the driver of the Charger, took him to the intersection of 34th and Jackson. That man, who was 22-years-old, died.

The driver of the SUV is in the hospital and stable. He is 50 years old and lives in Kansas City, Missouri, according to police.
