UPDATE: Police charged 26-year-old James Brisbin, of Independence, with assault on a law enforcement officer and armed criminal action.
Brisbin is in serious condition after an officer-involved shooting following an assault Friday night.
Police were called to the 400 block of Main Street shortly after 10:00 p.m. where Brisbin was allegedly beating a woman.
Officers discovered Brisbin and a female in the parking lot. As officers approached, he brandished a screwdriver and advanced toward the officers.
After refusing to stop and drop the weapon, he was shot at least once.
The man was transported to a local hospital in serious condition.
Witnesses told officers Brisbin had been acting violently and irrationally before officers arrived.
The officers were not injured, and no word yet on if the woman was injured.
Police are investigating the incident
