Officers were called to a home on Monday afternoon around 3 p.m. to assist a resident when shots were fired from inside of the home.

According to Liberty police, a woman told officers her son was inside the house.

When officers arrived on the scene and entered the house to make contact with the son, they heard one shot from inside, police said.

Officers called for a tactical response to secure the area and attempted to reach the son inside.

A robot was used to check the interior of the residence in an attempt to determine the status of anyone inside, according to authorities. The Liberty Police Department and North Kansas City SWAT teams then searched the residence and located a male subject, believed to be the woman’s son, deceased in the basement. No one else was found inside the home.

A firearm was recovered at the scene and the death remains under investigation, according to Liberty police.
