KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A woman was struck by gunfire and taken to an area hospital after a man fired shots into an off-duty Raytown officer’s personal vehicle early Friday morning, police said.

Around 6:10 a.m., the off-duty officer was driving on Raytown Road and saw a woman fleeing from a black car, which was stopped on Raytown Road just north of 59th Street, the police department said in a news release.

The officer, who was in his personal vehicle and not in uniform, told the woman he would give her a ride to police headquarters, a few blocks from the scene.

According to police, while the officer and the woman were driving to police headquarters, a man in the black car fired multiple shots into the officer’s car.

The man fled the scene, according to police.

When the officer and the woman arrived at police headquarters a few minutes later, they saw that the woman had been shot. She was transported to an area hospital, where her condition was unknown.

The officer was not injured in the incident.

Police said they found the suspect in Kansas City, Missouri, less than an hour later. He was taken into custody.
