Pope Francis released a new document Friday addressing hot-button issues, including same-sex marriage. The church’s stance on gay marriage remains the same, but Pope Francis preached acceptance and love toward LGBTQ individuals.
At Country Club Congregational United Church of Christ, around 40 percent of the congregation is a part of the LBGTQ community. Reverend Chase Peeples says many are Catholics who have left the church looking for acceptance.
"They've come because they're looking for a congregation that welcomes everyone," said Rev. Peeples.
Rev. Peeples says the document is a step in the right direction, but not the full change some are looking for.
"I would want it to go further I think it's a change of ton rather than a change of substance in many ways," said Rev. Peeples.
Dennis Coday, editor of the National Catholic Reporter, says the biggest change will come with how pastors and bishops on a local level address same-sex couples.
“He wants them to first of all embrace people where they are at, and instead of lording it over them and judging them he wants the pastors to walk with his people," said Coday.
Other issues were addressed in the document, including divorce. The same teaching of acceptance applies.
