KCK police officers removed a live grenade from a car at 200 South 8th Street on Sunday.

The car was illegally parked and unregistered at 3:03 p.m. While police completed the tow report they saw what appeared to be the top part of a grenade protruding from a velvet bag.

A bomb technician was able to make his way to the car, open the door and pull the device out. He ensured it was taped and rolled it into a black bag to safely take it to the bomb squad truck.

Jayra Lugo had to cancel her son's 3rd birthday party when guests couldn't access the street.

"It's a neighborhood full of kids. Like every house has kids," said Lugo. "It's kind of scary because just where the car was, that house next to it there's maybe five kids that live there and they're all so small."

Police are still investigating how the grenade got into the car in the first place. They towed the car out of the neighborhood.

"We also do know that the car is reported stolen, I believe out of Missouri," said Kansas City, Kansas Police Officer Thomas Tomasic.

This incident remains under investigation by the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department who is encouraging anyone with information to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
