KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A move to repeal a pit bull ban in Prairie Village took a step forward on Tuesday evening after discussion among the City Council.

The council voted 9-3 in favor of directing city staff to draft an ordinance that repeals the breed-specific language in the existing ordinance.

Action on the amended ordinance could be taken at either the council’s Feb. 3 or Feb. 18 meeting, according to a city spokeswoman. The item on Tuesday's agenda was heard during the council committee of the whole, which meant binding action could not be taken.

The existing city ordinance makes it unlawful to own a pit bull within city limits. The city considered lifting the ban in 2016 but ultimately left it in place.
