KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Prairie Village police are warning Kansas City Chiefs fans of counterfeit tickets circulating for Sunday’s home playoff game.

Police on Tuesday said that as part of the scam, the “seller” used phone numbers with a 913 or 816 area code and then blocked the number after receiving online payment for the tickets.

The fake phone numbers were created online, police said.

“Remember to purchase tickets through a verified source to avoid being scammed,” the department said on Facebook.

According to the Chiefs, fans should use NFL-approved retailers such as NFL Ticket Exchange, StubHub and SeatGeek to buy or resell tickets. Individual tickets for the playoffs will be mobile entry only.

Kansas City, Missouri, police told 41 Action News that the department took reports last year from fans who said they were sold fraudulent tickets.

Those purchasing tickets should make sure to be cautious of discounts that sound too good to be true, KCPD Det. Lori Meadors said.

“If it’s too good to be true, it probably is,” Meadors said. “Make sure you know the value of your ticket before you’re purchasing it, so if you’re looking to buy a playoff ticket and say as a general number it’s $200 and somebody is selling something for $125 and it’s a very popular game, that’s probably a red flag.”

After a bye week, the Chiefs (12-4) take on the Houston Texans (11-6) in the AFC Divisional playoffs at 2:05 p.m. Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium.
