KANSAS CITY, Mo. — An ice rink is coming to Prairiefire in Overland Park, Kansas.

Merrill Companies announced it has selected KCIce to manage and operate an outdoor ice rink in the center of the development.

The 100-foot-by-120-foot rink will be located on the north border of 135th Street between Nall and Lamar avenues.

It will host hockey and curling activities and offer figure skating and ice dancing lessons in the winter. It will also offer open-skate options and be converted for sports and outdoor programming during the summer.

Construction on the rink is expected to be finished by fall 2020.

This is the third proposed ice rink in Johnson County. The cities of Olathe and Overland Park are both moving forward with plans for indoor hockey and sports arenas. Those would be larger and more expensive. Olathe and Overland Park have expressed interest in trying to secure STAR bonds for the project.

The arena in Olathe would be located at the former site of the Great Mall of the Great Plains, at Interstate 35 and 151st Street. The arena in Overland Park would be located Southwest of U.S. Highway 69 and 159th Street.
