Prom is a big deal for many high schoolers, but it can come at an expensive price. Woods Chapel United Methodist Church is making sure every girl has her moment, even if she can't afford a dress.
The church's Prom Boutique is on its 13th year. Girls can come and browse 3,000 donated dresses, pick one, and even have it altered by on-site seamstresses. They leave with shoes, a bag, a piece of jewelry, and a smile.
"The expressions on their faces - some of them have never worn a dress before. A lot of them have never worn heels. All of a sudden, they don't look like a soccer player who walked in here with shin guards on, they look like a princess," organizer Christy Barber said.
The boutique has sizes from 0 to 30s, so every girl has a good chance of finding the perfect dress. Organizers pick through all the donations, keep the ones still in style and steam them.
The boutique is open Friday 3pm - 7pm, and Saturday 9am - 2pm.
The church takes donations all year-round.
Woods Chapel is located at 4725 NE Lakewood Way, Lee's Summit, MO 64064.
