KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Jackson County, Missouri, Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker said Thursday she is denouncing charges filed by Kansas City, Missouri’s city prosecutor against non-violent protesters.

Peters Baker said her office has fielded calls from residents concerned that her office has been filing charges against non-violent protesters.

“Based on calls to my office and after speaking to protest organizer Henry Service, it is clear many citizens are confused and believe my office has filed charges against dozens of protesters who were arrested for minor offenses like walking in the street or stepping off a curb,” Peters Baker wrote in a statement.

The only charges filed by Jackson County prosecutors in connection with the multi-night protests in Kansas City came last weekend against those involved in stealing and looting of stores on the Country Club Plaza.

Her office said it will also review cases submitted involving suspects believed to have thrown dangerous objects.
