KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A protest petition has been filed by some Overland Park residents against a planned expansion of the Islamic Center of Kansas in southern Overland Park.

Earlier this month, the Overland Park Planning Commission approved the proposal near 163rd Street and Roe Avenue. Plans call for a mosque, community center, school and daycare.

But on Friday, an Overland Park spokesperson said the city had received a protest petition against the development.

According to city rules, 20 percent of people living within 200 feet of the project have to sign the petition.

If the petition is deemed valid, the proposal would need at least seven votes on the Overland Park City Council to move forward.

According to a flyer circulating in the neighborhood, some residents feel the project would increase traffic, the risk of accidents and create parking and noise issues.

An attorney representing the project told 41 Action news earlier this month that the plan is similar to one that received approval by the Cambridge Church in 2007. That proposal was never built.

The city spokesperson said it will take several days for staff to review signatures on the petition.
