KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A small fire Tuesday at the Shawnee Municipal Courthouse has closed the building for the remainder of the day.

The Shawnee Fire Department responded to a reported fire at the courthouse shortly after 9:30 a.m. A malfunctioning air handler was circulating smoke in the building.

The building was evacuated, and court was canceled for the day.

“The court staff is working remotely,” Municipal Court Supervisor Bettina Jamerson told 41 Action News via email. “We have cleaning crews coming in and plan to open for business tomorrow at 8 a.m.”

The morning docket was open, because Tuesday is reserved as a walk-in docket for individuals who missed a court date and want to resolve a case with a judge.

The next walk-in docket will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 12.

The courthouse’s closure also postponed two trials related to traffic charges, which were scheduled for the afternoon.
