Threat at Kansas elementary school unfounded, police say

UPDATE, 7:15 a.m. | Police say their investigation into the incident leads them to believe the man making the threats did not live in the area and made up the threats. Police believe the man was seeking media attention.

"To the best of our knowledge, the school and people in the area are safe," police said in an update.

EARLIER | Riley County, Kansas, police are asking everyone to avoid the 700 block of Lee Street in Manhattan.

According to the police Facebook page, a perimeter was set up around Lee Elementary School for a reported hostage situation.

The call came in before 1 a.m. from a man claiming to be inside the building with a hostage.

Police have not verified whether the man is inside the building or whether a hostage is involved.
