KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The search for a missing 13-year-old boy who went missing Thursday in fast-moving water at Clinton Lake has been called off for the night.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office responded to Outlet Park at Clinton Lake, which is located southwest of Lawrence, before 7 p.m.

A teenager from Lawrence went missing in the water at the spillway, according to the sheriff’s office.

“Clinton Lake has been in the process of releasing a lot of water,” Douglas County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Kristen Channel said. “It was moving very rapidly at the time that he did go into the water. Currently, we have turned off the water to the outlet to lower the water level to make searching a little easier, and it won’t be turned back on until we’re able to find him.”

Rescue crews called off the search for the night around 9:30 p.m. and announced plans to resume looking for the boy at sunrise.

“The area is a recreational area, but it’s not an area common for people to be in the water,” Channel said.
