KANSAS CITY, Mo. — People living in two units at an Overland Park apartment complex were displaced after an early-morning fire, the Overland Park Fire Department said.

Spokesman Jason Rhodes said crews were called to the scene at 108th and Hemlock just after 2 a.m.

The first crews on the scene said there was light smoke coming from the three-story building and evacuation was in progress.

In a second-floor apartment, firefighters found a kitchen fire, which they were able to extinguish in minutes.

While the fire was contained to that apartment, it and another were not fit to be reoccupied.

The residents of the two units were placed in other apartments at the same complex.

Investigators believe unattended cooking caused the fire, Rhodes said.

One cat died in the fire.
