KANSAS CITY, Mo. — On Wendesday, KidsAndCars.org plans to hold an event for people to learn more about child-proofing vehicles.

KidsAndCars.org has planned a demonstration that will identify danger areas and safety features.

Demonstrations will show:

  • 360-degree technology/bird's-eye-view technology
  • Enabling a car's back door child proof locks
  • Car-seat installation by a certified car seat technician
  • Window lock for power windows
  • Actions to take to help a child or animal in distress inside a hot car

In 2018, KidsAndCars.org reported 131 children died in nontraffic related incidents. The majority of them were frontovers, heatstroke and backovers.

What Happens Now and the AAA Foundation of Traffic Safety shared a few points on children and car safety:

  • Buckle Up. Before the car is even started, it's encouraged for everyone to put their seatbelts on. A consistent message will strengthen the safety habit.
  • Fasten all unused seatbelts, even underneath the car seats when not in use. AAA Foundation of Traffic Safety states this will prevent injuries.
  • Test out your blind spot. Before starting your car, sit in the driver's seat and have someone stand behind the bumper of the car. Have that person put their hand by their waist and start walking backwards until the driver is able to see that hand in the rear view mirror. This will show how far your blind spot is. Let children know about blind spots as well.
  • Before getting in the car, take a walk around it, to make sure no one or item is in the way before driving to your destination.

The event will be held at 9221 Flint St. in the Customs Specialties parking lot at 1 p.m. in Overland Park, Kansas
