KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The body of a 65-year-old man was recovered on Wednesday morning from Hillsdale Lake in Miami County after a reported drowning there, authorities said.

He has been identified as Richard W. Bangs, of Spring Hill, Kansas.

Capt. Matthew Kelly, a spokesman for the Miami County Sheriff's Office, said the Bangs was found 2,000 feet offshore and 27 feet below the surface.

A witness told emergency personnel that Bangs was trying to tie his boat to a dock when he fell in and did not resurface, according to a news release from the Miami County Sheriff's Office.

The incident happened about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Marysville Boat Ramp at 253rd Street and Orleans Road.

Dive teams from several agencies searched the water on Tuesday evening, including teams from Garmin International.

The Garmin teams brought specialized equipment that enabled them to find Bangs' body despite trees, debris and zero visibility.

Recovery efforts were suspended around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday night and resumed Wednesday morning.

The Marysville Boat Ramp and waters around the ramp were closed due to the search.

No foul play is suspected.
