Suspect back in custody after search in Leavenworth County

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A man was taken back into custody after he escaped law enforcement on Tuesday afternoon, prompting an hours-long manhunt near Tonganoxie, Kansas.

According to the Coffey County Sheriff's Office, deputies investigating a string of burglaries and vehicle thefts took a suspect into custody on Tuesday morning.

He accompanied deputies to Leavenworth County, where he escaped law enforcement custody, the sheriff's office said.

Several different agencies, including the Leavenworth County Sheriff's Office and Kansas Highway Patrol, searched for the man for several hours near 222nd Street and Honey Creek Avenue.

The Leavenworth County Sheriff's Office said the suspect was taken into custody shortly before 6 p.m.

The man, a 26-year-old Leavenworth resident, was arrested near 214th Street and Hemphill Road.

He was taken to the Leavenworth County Jail and was being held pending charges.
