Severe thunderstorms move through Kansas City area

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The National Weather Service issued severe thunderstorm warnings for parts of the Kansas City area Monday morning.

2:25 p.m. | The Bates County, Missouri, Sheriff’s office said Monday that one person died after severe storms caused a tree to crash into a house.

1:50 p.m. | The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that several tractor trailers were blown over in southeast Cass County, Missouri, as part of this morning's storms.

1:36 p.m. | Cass County officials shared photos of high wind damage that happened near Garden City.

12:45 p.m. | Power outages have been reported across the Kansas City area.

Evergy reported more than 300 active outages as of 12:45 p.m., with nearly 21,000 customers affected.

BPU reported 25 outages with nearly 400 affected customers, and Independence Power & Light reported 29 outages with almost 1,000 customers affected.

12:35 p.m. | Viewers sent 41 Action News photos of the shelf cloud that preceded storms in Kansas Monday morning.

41 Action News also began to receive reports of damage.

Deborah Horne in La Cygne, Kansas, sent photos of her property, where pieces of her garage, torn apart in the storm, ended up in nearby trees.

12:30 p.m. | Another severe thunderstorm warning for portions of Cass, Jackson and Bates counties expired at 12:30 p.m.

NWS said wind gusts of 70 mph and quarter-sized hail could be expected in those areas.

PREVIOUS | The agency said parts of Johnson, Miami and Linn counties in Kansas would be under the warning until noon.

NWS warned of dangerous winds reaching up to 80 mph potentially, and advised residents to take shelter.

Kansas City-area counties were previously under a warning until 11 a.m.

That included Bates, Cass, Clay, Jackson and Platte counties in Missouri, and Johnson, Leavenworth and Wyandotte counties in Kansas.

NWS warned of damaging 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-sized hail.
