KANSAS CITY, Mo. — People enjoying school playgrounds in the Shawnee Mission School District get a failing grade when it comes to following the rules.

The district announced Tuesday that it will close and lock all school playgrounds.

According to the district, people ignored signs to stay off playground equipment as one way to try to slow the spread of COVID-19.

A news release from the school district said the closures are consistent with guidelines from the Johnson County Department of Health and Environment.

District athletic stadiums and athletic facilities are open, as long as rules at those locations are followed.

Those rules are:

  • Social distancing, with 6 feet of distance between anyone not in the same household;
  • No groups of more than 10 people;
  • No team sports, including football, basketball, baseball, soccer and frisbee.

The district will continue to monitor the facilities that remain open and may issue new restrictions if rules are not followed.
