KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A 17-year-old was injured in a shooting Tuesday afternoon in Shawnee, which also sent a nearby school into lockdown for a brief time, according to the Shawnee Police Department.

According to the department, officers responded to an armed disturbance in the 10900 block of 66th Street.

Officers located a teen who had non-life threatening injuries after being shot in the hand, arm and leg in the parking lot of an apartment complex.

The victim told police that he met two people in the parking lot of the apartment complex and entered their vehicle. A dispute followed.

The two suspects fled the scene in a dark-colored sedan, according to the department.

In the area, Nieman Elementary School went on a lockdown as police investigated the shooting.

No one from the school was involved, and district officers were on site, according to a Shawnee Mission School District spokesperson.

Students at Nieman were held inside the building until they were sent home shortly after 4 p.m.
