KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Shawnee voters rejected a proposal to raise property taxes for a new community center at 61st Street and Woodland Drive, the city said Tuesday.

The measure was voted down 72 percent to 28 percent, the city said in a tweet. The Johnson County Election Office received 19,951 mail-in ballots, a turnout of about 46 percent.

The proposed 20-year property tax rate increase would have allowed the city to issue $38 million in bonds to fund construction of the community center.

The facility would have focused on recreational activities for children and adults, featuring an indoor pool, track, gym and athletic field.

The city purchased the land near 61st Street and Woodland Drive in 2007. Discussions about building the community center at that location began again in 2018.

The city said staff will now start researching potential other uses for the property.
