The Moehlmans spent the day at Union Station trying to find activities for a snow day.
Lindsey Moehlman decided the KC Streetcar was a great option to entertain her four children.
"I just think it's a different way of transportation back-and-forth through the city and a free thing to do for the kids," said Moehlman.
It was a free ride that stalled over the weekend thanks to snow and ice. On Saturday, motorists sliding on ice blocked the tracks and caused a delay. On Sunday morning, it was strictly the snow and ice on the track switcher.
Donna Mandelbaum is the communications manager for the KC Streetcar Authority.
“There was just a huge accumulation of snow and ice that fell into our track switcher and froze. With extreme temperatures, we did have to deal with that. While we were doing that, there was ice forming on our overhead wires," said Mandelbaum.
Back in May, rain caused a track switcher malfunction that caused a derailment.
Over the weekend, passengers were alerted to the delays via digital boards and Twitter.
KCATA buses were brought to transport passengers as crews worked to fix the track switcher.
The KC Streetcar Authority learned lessons this weekend they'll use moving forward.
“We now have different maintenance techniques down at our track switch; if accumulations happen down there we are ready for them. We also decreased our speed limits," said Mandelbaum. “We definitely learned some valuable lessons this weekend on how to battle for the next snow event."
The KC Streetcar was back up to normal speeds by Monday afternoon and is running on schedule.
