As many as seven students were hospitalized as a precaution after a suspicious odor was reported at Liberty High School, according to school officials.
They said a mechanical failure of an electrical heating unit was the cause of the odor. Carbon monoxide and other obvious hazards were not detected.
The odor was reported around 9 a.m. and present in the 400 wing of the building. At that time, 140 students were in that part of the building and 50 students reported symptoms of nausea and dizziness, according to Liberty fire chief Snider.
Students were removed from the area and emergency personnel were called to the scene.
Classes are continuing as normal. It is unknown how long emergency crews will be on site
Liberty Hospital released the following statement about the students they are treating:
"Liberty Hospital staff currently is responding to the incident involving the odor being reported at Liberty High School. We ask that parents and family members of students coming to Liberty Hospital to please enter through the main entrance. This will facilitate more immediate response to questions and concerns."
