KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Tonganoxie police officer’s attempt to initiate a traffic stop led to tragedy shortly before 6 p.m. Friday on U.S. 24 near North Village Terrace.

The officer, identified as Nicholas Ontiveros in a Kansas Highway Patrol crash information report, was driving westbound on U.S. 24.

He activated the emergency lights on the department-issued Ford Explorer and performed a U-turn in an attempt to stop an eastbound vehicle.

While making the turn, a Harley-Davidson driven by Tommy Roe, 62, of Anchorage Alaska, struck Ontiveros’ police vehicle and he was ejected from the motorcycle.

Roe was taken to the hospital but died from his injuries.
