KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Three people died after a shooting in an east Kansas City neighborhood Friday morning, officials confirmed.
The shooting was in a neighborhood near 17th and Chelsea, about a block from Hogan Elementary School.
A man and a woman died at the scene. A third woman, who called police just before 10 a.m. to report the shooting, later died at the hospital.
The Kansas City Police Department later identified the two women as Jennifer Zimmerman, 30, and Yessenia Ahumada, 25, both of Kansas City.
Detectives are attempting to contact relatives of the man living outside the U.S. to get a positive identification before releasing his name.
One of the victim's family members said she was in shock after hearing the news. Jackie Cox said her niece was at her home Friday morning to visit before the shooting happened.
"We were watching the news and we saw my niece’s house, saying three people got shot and we came out here to find out what was going on. We really don’t know anything," Cox said.
Cox said her niece had five pit bulls living in the home. Police have been working to get them out to continue their investigation.
“There are still more dogs inside, but we don’t know of any other children or or any other people associated with the residence," said Cpt. Mike Hicks of KCPD.
KCPD officers had the block taped off during their investigation. Information on any suspects or circumstances of the shooting were not immediately available.
