It didn't take long for Ryan Townsend to realize someone broke into his West Plaza home.

"The alarm clock was gone and as I started to walk through the house, I very quickly figured out the back door was wide open because it had been smashed in," Townsend said.

The thieves disabled the motion detector and took off with an estimated $10,000 worth of stolen items.

However, Townsend was surprised to discover, "They stole some of my underwear and my undershirts and they stole blankets off of the bed, it's really weird."

Townsend says he and his fiance weren't the only ones hit,

"Actually there was a neighbor who had a car broken into around the same period so they're all a little nervous," Townsend said.

The two were glad they weren't home when the thieves broke in but the couple was sad they lost something money can't replace.

"They're probably not the most special looking antique cufflinks but just the fact that they belonged to my grandfather and they're one of the few things I have left physically from him," Townsend said.

Kansas City police said West Plaza and other parts of Midtown have experience an uptick in burglaries and armed robberies.

Police recommend adding extra lights and alarms. Also, ensure thieves cannot see inside the home.

KCPD has officers who will analyze homes to point out any changes homeowners can make to prevent intruders.
