KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Wayside Waifs is helping rescue animals from shelters in the path of the two tropical storms headed for the Gulf Coast of the United States.

According to the Kansas City shelter, the Humane Society of the United States reached out and asked for help evacuating animals as Tropical Storm Marco and Tropical Storm Laura head for the Louisiana area.

Marco was downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm Monday, but will still pack a punch. Laura could be upgraded to a hurricane before reaching the coast and has already claimed lives in the Caribbean.

The rescue sent two team members down Sunday to the Jefferson Parish to bring back nearly 50 animals. They are expected back in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

According to Wayside Waifs, the 50 pets will mostly include large-breed dogs. The animals will be evaluated by veterinarians when they make it to Kansas City and could be up for adoption as early as the end of this week or the beginning of next week.
