Wild winds bring business to tree trim companies

It's a stark contrast from Monday night's unapologetic weather, as crews cleaned up downed limbs and even entire trees under clear, blue skies.

"About 8:00 this morning, our phones started ringing," explained Sunshine Tree Service arborist Joel Gordon. "We are evaluating, taking trees down, removal, clean up - anything from downed limbs and debris, to complete trees down."

While it's all hands on deck at Sunshine Tree Service, the tree trimmers say it could be a week or so before they can get to everyone on their waiting list.

"Worst case scenario, you do get damage on your house or car," he said. "So prevention as far as proper pruning, getting a certified arborist that can diagnose problems within a tree to prevent what might happen is important."

As for Kansas City Parks crews, they actually began their work before the storm struck.

"We've seen a lot of trees down blocking streets and sidewalks," said Mike Overcash, a forester with the city of Kansas City. "We are working on clearing the roads for public safety."

Even if a tree from personal property falls in the street or sidewalk, the city will remove it from the public thoroughfare for free as a safety measure.

"We are going to stick with it," said Overcash. "This area has been heavily hit. We will go through and do a sweep and make sure we haven't missed anything."

And they're moving fast. Of the 50 calls the city's 3-1-1 office received, 40 had been tended to by midday.

Do you have a downed tree in a public thoroughfare? Call the city's 3-1-1 line to have it removed.
