KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A winter weather advisory has been issued for the Kansas City area from 5 p.m. Tuesday to 3 a.m. Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service and the 41 Action News weather team, a wintry mix is expected in areas on both sides of the state line.

Rain is expected in northern counties this morning, with southern winds raising temperatures above freezing for most and freezing drizzle possible for some.

The system will bring colder temperatures down into the metro area by late Tuesday afternoon (between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.), meaning rain that has fallen earlier in the day could flash freeze to roads. Rain will also transition to snow around this time.

The National Weather Service said a light glaze of ice and minor snow accumulations are possible.

The Olathe, Blue Valley and Shawnee school districts have all canceled all school activities beginning after 6 p.m. Tuesday. Olathe also canceled all practices and events scheduled for Wednesday morning.

Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools has canceled all sports activities and games beginning after 4 p.m. Tuesday.
