OLATHE, Kan. — A Johnson County jury convicted a woman Friday of aggravated battery for beating a child at an unlawful daycare.

In addition to the battery charge, Paige Hatfield, 27, of Olathe, was found guilty of unlawfully running a daycare out of her home.

Kingston Gilbert, four-months-old at the time, suffered severe brain injuries that left him blind, according to court testimony.

The trial lasted a week.

41 Action News reporter Sarah Plake, who was in the courtroom when the verdict was read, reports the jury is deliberating on three factors that could impact Hatfield's sentence.

Those factors are the victim's age, the defendant had a duty to take care of him and Hatfield's conduct was excessive in brutality.
