One woman is dead after a small apartment fire on Thursday in Independence.

The fire department responded to the call at 5:15 a.m at 1300 Lexington Avenue.

A 63-year-old woman was found dead inside her first floor apartment.

The fire affected at least five apartments and about 15 people were evacuated.

Fire crews believe the fire started in the victim’s bedroom, but the cause is still under investigation.
