UPDATE 12:54 p.m. | According to the Cass County Sheriff's Department, the woman who was shot during an abduction late Sunday night has been released from the hospital.

Donald L. Hunter, 39, of Warsaw, Missouri, has been identified as her abductor. He was shot and killed by law enforcement and the incident is being reviewed by the Western Missouri Sheriff's Critical Incident Investigation Team led by Cass County investigators.

UPDATE 12:54 p.m. | Cass County sheriff deputies say the woman remains hospitalized with serious injuries. Police are hoping to release the suspect's name later this afternoon.

EARLIER | A woman kidnapped in Butler last night is in a Kansas City hospital with serious injuries after she was shot in front of Bates County Sheriff's deputies.

The sheriff's department said they received a call about a kidnapping in Butler around 9:30 p.m. Sunday. The woman was forced into her car at gunpoint from her place of employment.

Authorities had information the vehicle may have been returning to the Kansas City area.

Deputies and a municipal police officer saw the vehicle northbound on Interstate 49 and attempted to stop it.

The vehicle pulled over and a woman got out, then walked toward the officers. A man got out from the back seat and shot the woman in the face, the sheriff's department said.

The deputies and officer returned fire, striking the man.

Deputies, fire personnel and paramedics gave the man and woman first aid.

The woman was transported to a Kansas City area hospital where she is being treated for serious injuries.

The man died at the scene.

The woman had recently filed an exparte order preventing the man from being around her.

The deputies have been placed on administrative leave.

The Cass County Sheriff's Office is conducting the shooting investigation.
