KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A 62-year-old woman died Thursday morning in a two-car crash in Leavenworth County.

The woman, whose name was not released, was driving east on Fairmount Road in a Ford Focus just after 10 a.m., according to a Leavenworth County Sheriff's Office news release.

She also had an infant in a car seat with her, according to the sheriff's office.

A 22-year-old Leavenworth man was driving a Chevrolet Cruze north on 147th Street when he apparently failed to yield at a stop sign and struck the woman's vehicle with enough force to send both cars into a ditch.

Deputies found the Ford Focus engine about 30 feet south of the car, the release said.

The woman died at the University of Kansas Hospital.

The infant was properly secured in his car seat and did not suffer serious injuries.

The driver of the Chevrolet was not wearing an seat belt and is believed to have been going faster than the posted 40 mph speed limit, the sheriff's office said. The severity of his injuries were not released.
